NEW LIFE-SAVING CANOE
ADDITION TO ST. CLAIR CLUB The St Claifr Life-saving Club launched a new 18ft four-man lifesaving canoe at ■ the St. Clair Beach last evening. Mr J. L. Mclndoe, president of the clulsi, in a short address, congratulated th<j: designer, Mr H D (“Duke”) Gilliesf after whom the boat was named, and the four builders— Messrs J. Walsh, A. Tonkin, N. Browne, and V. Simonsesia. Prior to a trial, which was carried out in heavy seas and a high wind ,the boat was christened Duke by Miss Margaret Braisley- v The crew expressed themselves as well satisfied wit|i the seaworthiness and speed of the boat, which should be a valuable addition to the fleet of canoes owned by the club. The canoe will be sent to New Brighton, Christchurch where den lonstrations will be held at the New Zealand national surf life-saving championships on March 2 and 3. !
