OPERATIC SOCIETY

ANNUAL MEETING Tile annual meeting of the Dunedin Operatic and Dramatic Society was held last night, Mr J, B. Collier presiding. There was an attendance of over 50 members. The annual report stated that the production of " Sally ” last year had proved successful, and the cast, selected from members of the society, was to be congratulated. The net profit on the production had amounted to £165. With the increase in royalties, however, and the increased costs in other directions, the profit was not as large as had been hoped for. The society was, nevertheless, in a sound financial position, although it was felt that the cost of future productions would have to be carefully watched. The prospects for the coming year appeared brighter than for some time, as with the war over, old members were returning to lend their assistance, Moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, the chairman welcomed back members who had returned from overseas and said the society was to be congratulated on the success of last year's activities. The report was adopted.

The election of office-bearers resulted as follows: —President, Mr Walter Sinton; vice-presidents—Messrs C. E. Begg, J. Shannon and J. B. Collier; secretary and treasurer, Mr E. S. Wilson; auditor, Mr D. M. Spedding; committee—Messrs A. Spears, G. King, G. Huntley, C. McQueen, D. Lawson and B. Sullivan. The chairman reported that several productions had been considered for this year, including " Katinka ” and “ Our Miss Gibbs," but it had finally been decided 1o suggest to the committee that the production should be “ Firefly,” which was just concluding an extended and successful season in Auckland.
