OAMARU RED CROSS

MONTHLY MEETING Mrs Smith Morton (president) occupied the chair at the monthly meeting of tire Oamaru Sub-centre of the New Zealand Red Cross, Society. It was reported that during the month 483 skeins of wool and 38 yards of material had been given out, and 61 pairs of socks, 171 knitted garments, and 217 other articles of clothing, all new material, had been received. The Dominion secretary (Mr Galloway) visited Oamaru during the month, and was favourably impressed with the work accomplished. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr McPhee for his assistance in connection with this visit. Mrs Stevenson was appointed convener at the Red Cross corner for the annual Returned Services’ Appeal, and other members were appointed to help. It was reported that during the month 21 cases of clothing containing 1383 articles, had been packed ready to be foi warded to Wellington. Members of the transport section had continued to meet trains with returning men on board, the last one on December 7 at 2.30 a.m., when there were several Maheno men who had to be transported home. It was expected that the section' would be required to convey men to hospital for treatment. Mrs Morton thanked all members for their co-operation and assistance during the year, and appreciation was expressed of Mrs Morton’s efficient organisation and work.
