SECOND VICTORY TEST

AUSTRALIA’S TOTAL 147 FOLLOW-ON AVERTED LONDON, June 25. Australia, all out for 147, had to fight hard to avert a follow-on in the second victory test at Sheffield. The English batsmen in their second innings also failed badly, being dismissed for 190. Australia needs 330 to win. The wicket to-day did not appear to be unduly vicious, but England’s swing bowlers got plenty of work out of it, and Pope, who finished with fine figures, exploited a spot on the pitch. Apart from Carmody, none of the Australians looked like staying long. Dew on the pitch helped England’s fast and medium b9wlers, Pope and Pollard, in the session before .lunch, when Australia lost eight wickets for 133. Hassett’s early dismissal for 5, and the running out, after he had made 17, of Miller, who scored a century in the first victory test, started the Australian collapse. Washbrook and Hutton gave England a good start, putting on 56 for the first wicket, but seven wickets then fell for the addition of 36 runs, in spite of a solid 38 by Hammond. Griffith and Pollard added 55 for the eighth wicket. The attendance was approximately 30,000. Following are the scores:— Australia.—First innings, 147 (Carmody 42. Pepper 21). Bowling: Pope five for 58, Pollard one for 42, Wright two for 14. England.—First innings, 286. Second innings, 190 (Hutton 46, Washbrook 24, Hammond 38, Griffith 35, Pollard 25). Bowling: Miller two for 28, Ellis three for 47, Pepper two for 46, Price three for 18.
