JAPAN’S AIR LOSSES
OUTPACING PRODUCTION PILOTS RELUCTANT TO FIGHT WASHINGTON, (Rec. 7 p.m.) May 17. Navy and army spokesmen revealed that the Japanese have lost 21,000 planes since the outbreak of the war. Viceadmiral Fitch, deputy chief of naval operations for air, believes that Japan’s aviation losses are so great that it is. doubtful whether the enemy’s aircraft production and pilot training can keep pace with such a mortality rate. An official Navy spokesman expressed mystification at the reluctance of Japanese pilots to 1 fight against the attackers of their homeland. He added “It looks as if they fly away when they see us coiping. They are apparently trying to’ save their air force, but I do not know for what they area saving it.”
