PORT BLAIR ATTACKED

BRITISH BOMBER FORCE LONDON, May 18.

The most westerly-held Japanese base ih the Bay of Bengal. Port Blair, in tfie Andaman Islands, was attacked by a large force of aircraft to-day, which concentrated on harbour installations. Heavy anti-aircraft fire did not deter the airmen, who came in at 2000 ft to press home the attack. Marine workshops were destroyed and large oil fires started, while the main coaling point was written off. The Japanese have been using the port as a naval and air base to cover the western shores of the Malay Peninsula. A South-east Asia Command communique says that Allied heavy bombers yesterday attacked the Andaman Islands, badly damaging the jetty at Chatham Island. The jetty and marine workshops at Phoenix Bay were destroyed, as was the jetty at Hopetown.

Other formations damaged bridges south of Chumpon, on the BangkokSingapore railway.
