BOWLING

CONDUCT OF COMPETITIONS

PROGRESSIVE SCHEME ADOPTED The president (Mr E. Longworth) was in the chair at a meeting of the Dunedin Bowling Centre on -Saturday night. There .was a full attendance of club delegates. , . The president said that, following the printed circular which had been received from Mr C. J. Payne outlining a scheme for an improved method of playing the interclub and four-rink championship matches, the Draw Committee had deliberated on th&*mattd£<and had prepared a report. The centre'Could not do anything practical in the matter until approval was given at the annual meeting, but it was for the delegates to report to their clubs on the findings of the Draw Committee. _ ... On behalf of the Draw Committee, Mr J. J. Davis reported that the committee had considered in detail the proposal to play the Holmes Feathers competition on Saturday afternoons. The committee was' unanimous that the proposal was practicable, and that a suitable draw could be made both for the Holmes Feathers competition and for an interclub competition, including the other Saturday players. The committee wished, however, to make the following suggestions if it were decided to adopt the proposals: — (1) That the two divisions of the proposed competition be carried out under the names of the Holmes Feathers Competition and the Saturday Shield Competition, and be not called A and B Grades; (2) that the Holmes Feathers competition be played as formerly—that is, in two sections if necessary; (3) that entres in the Holmes Feathers competition be limited, as in the past, to one entry from each club; (4) that the Saturday Shield competition be played in sections of three rinks as in the past; (5) that some regulations governing’ the transfer of players from the Holmes Feathers competition to the Saturday Shield competition be lnu-o-duced; (6) that the Leads and Seconds Tournament be confined to leads and seconds in the Saturday Shield comPe it ti should ly be explained, Mr Davis said, that in a further letter Mr Payne had said that instead of having A and B pennants he would suggest the playing of two games on a Saturday—-four-rink matches and pennant matches (the Saturday Shield Competition). Mr' W. O. Clark said that the function, of the Draw Committee had been to decide whether the scheme was practicable or not, and it had found it to be so. There were sufficient greens in Dunedin to enable the scheme to be adopted. He thought it was important that regulations be introduced to provide for the transfer of players from One competition to the other. The secretary (Mr R. S. M. Sinclair) said the Four Rinks Competition was a championship competition, and, therefore, there would be only one representative. from each club. The 'report .of the committee was adopted, and it was also decided to forward the report to the New Zealand Bowling Association as a remit from the centre.

Other Remits

A large number of remits to the New Zealand Association from other centres were considered. The Gisborne-East Coast Centre forwarded suggestions for the representation of smaller centres on the New Zealand Bowling Council, allowing for the personnel of the council to total 41 delegates—lt was pointed out that if these proposals were carried into .effect the North Island representation -would be far greater than that of the, South Island, and further, that a council composed of 41 members would he too unwieldy. One member suggested that the smaller centres should band together and secure the election of one man on the council who could attend to their interests.—Qn the motion of Mr R. L. Fairmaid it was decided not to support the remit. ■, It was decided to support a remit from the Christchurch Centre urging that the correct dress for tournaments should include a white hat or cap, if headgear was to .be worn, the opinion being expressed that the dress was incongruous if surmounted by nonde-

script headgear. A further remit from Christchurch suggesting that the controller of the tournament should be given the power to modify the dress in special cases was rejected.
