ST. KILDA BOROUGH
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING OF COUNCIL The fortnightly meeting of the St. Kilda Borough Council was held last evening, and was attended by the Mayor (Mr N. D. Anderson) and Crs D. J. Simpson, T. D. B. Roy, J. C. Cherry, R. S. Brent, J W. Pearson, A. H. Finnie, E. Longworth, P. J. Rendel, and D. Telfer. A deputation comprising Messrs J. Himburg and H. E. Luscombe waited on the council to present a petition signed by 180 residents in the vicinity of Moreau street objecting to a proposal that the Forbury Park tram terminus should be at the corner of Moreau and Richardson streets. The petitioners considered that the trams “should continue the same route as at present and so not cause inconvenience to the residents in this particular neighbourhood.” The members of the deputation said that the signatories to the petition did not object to having the end of the 3d section at Moreau street, but they felt that the trams should continue running to their present terminus. —The matter is to be further considered by the council. Accounts totalling £536 10s 8d were passed for payment. It was reported that the receipts since the last meeting had amounted to £133 Bs. The bank balance was £6916 13s 6d on the credit side.
The amount of water consumed in the borough for the past fortnight was reported to have been 4,777,000 gallons, at a cost of £193 11s 7d. The cost of water supplied in the previous fortnight was £194 16s 7d. A circular letter was received from the Central Milk Council, Wellington, stating that, at the first meeting of the council on "February 27, it was decided that its first consideration should be the setting 7 up of milk authorities. The circular requested information and opinions from the various local bodies to which it was addressed.—-The council decided to suggest that the borough should be the local milk district and the Borough Council the local milk authority. It was also decided to send, the information asked for by the Milk Council. Arising out of a letter received from the St. Kilda Beach Improvement Society, it was decided to ask the City Council for a reduction in the charges for water supplied to the beach facilities. The Mayor advised that the full charge was not at present being made for water so supplied. It was decided that, as part of the peace celebrations at the conclusion of the war against Germany, a service should be held in the Coronation Hall on the Sunday afternoon following the cessation of hostilities. All the ministers of religion in the borough are to be invited.
