Mrs F. C. Brain, of Wellington, who lias been visiting Invercargill and Dunedin, has left for Blenheim and Nelson.
A Wellington girl soon to take up ballet dancing seriously is Miss Ngaire Harrison, who is joining the Borovansky ballet. Miss Harrison, a pupil of Miss Estelle Besre. attracted notice last year in a recital given by Miss Beere's pupils. She was selected by M. Bcrovansky, who gave her a trial in class when the ballet appeared in Wellington.
Miss Joan Kinney, daughter of Mr and Mrs T. Kinney, North street. Tirnaru, has been awarded one of the two exhibitions offered annually by Trinity College to candidates in the South Island obtaining the highest marks irrespective of grade or subject. A pupil of the Convent of Mercy, Miss Kinney won the exhibition for violin playing in the higher local grade with 96 marks. Mrs Dorothy Campbell Hurd Howe, the onlv woman who has won the Britisn, American and Canadian Womens Golt Championships, was fatally struck by a train recently at Yemassce, South Carolina. Mrs Howe, who in her golfing career won more than 750 prizes, was boin a Edinburgh in 1883. She won the British Women’s Championship in 1909 and 19lh the American title in 1909, 1910, and 1924. and the Canadian Championship in IJIU. 1911, and 1912. The annual meeting of the Dunedin branch of the Southland Girls High School Old Girls’ Association was held in the Pioneer Women's Memorial Hall on Wednesday evening last. The election of officers resulted as follows:— President, Miss Edna Sutherland; vice-presidents— Misses Budd, Enid Browett, May Kirkpatrick, and Mrs Perry; committee—Mrs Tonkin, Mrs Cameron. Misses L. Reict. R Huffadine. and V/. George; secretary. Miss J. M. Campbell.
Approximately 50 delegates from kindergarten associations throughout the Dominion are expected to be present at a refresher course to be held in Christchurch early in May. The conference will centre round the study of the physical and mental health of the young child. Lectures will be given by Dr I. L. G. Sutherland, Dr H. E. Field, and Dr R. Wtnterbourn. A committee consisting ot Mesdames H. T. J. Thacker, E. Hitchcock, and L. W. McCaskill has been set up by the Christchurch Free Kindergarten Association to deal with the hospitality and entertainment of the visitors.
The Otago High School Ex-girls Association held its annual meeting in the Women's Club lounge. The president, Miss L. G. Morton, welcomed Miss M. U. Fitzgerald as patron. During the evening items were given by Misses C. Clarke, B. Wilson, and M. Lemin. The officebearers for 1945 are as follows: Patron, Miss M. G. Fitzgerald; president Miss L G Morton; honorary vice-presidents— Dr M. Whyte, Mrs R. D. Nimmo, Miss F. Campbell, and members of the staff; active vice-presidents—Misses I. Cunningham, L. McCarthy, and H. Wilson; committee—Misses S. Fleming, G. Buchan, P. Norris, A. Knowles, D. Farquhar, A. Aitken, and D. Campbell; secretary and treasurer, Miss Stella Bayley.
