CHURCHES OF CHRIST

CENTENNIAL CONFERENCE During the next three days 30 Otago and Southland representatives will leave for Nelson to take part in the centennial conference of the Associated Churches of Christ. It was at Nelson that the work of the church in New Zealand was commenced 101 years ago this month. The celebration had to be postponed last year owing to travel difficulties.

The Nelson Church was the first in the southern hemisphere belonging to this communion. Its members helped in the founding of churches in Auckland, Wellington, Wanganui, Hokitika, and around Nelson. They also extended the work to Australia by opening the first church there at Adelaide in 184 R. At present there arc in the two countries 370 churches, with a total communicant membership of 38.000. The world membership is 2,000,000. The conference president at Nelson will be Mr G. Fretwell, of Palmerston North and formerly of Invercargill, the only member to have held this office for three years. The centennial sermon is to be preached by Principal A. L. Haddon, of Dunedin. '
