KINDERGARTEN’S POPULAR WIN

(Special) WELLINGTON, Oct. 23. Making his first public appearance since he ran unplaced in the last Wellington Cup, Kindergarten scored his third successive win in the Harcourt Stakes at Trentham to-day. Kindergarten was opposed by some of the best handicap horses in the Dominion, including Lord Chancellor, winner of the last Auckland Cup, Glenfalloch. who won the Wellington Handicap on Saturday, Don Quex, and Rink, but he disposed of them just as he did when at his best and was accorded a warm ovation from the crowd, Who welcomed his reappearance. Ills winning margin was small, but could have been considerably greater had his rider chosen to keep him going once he reached the front. The field went away to a splendid start, and Master Baron took up the pacem:fklng from Lord Chancellor, Beau Cheval, Glenfalloch, Lowry Bay, Rink, Don Quex, and Kindergarten. Before they reached the six furlongs Lord Chancellor had pulled his way up to Master Baron, and took over at the five, where Rink, Kindergarten, and Glenfalloch were in close attendance. Rink and Lord Chancellor wore on terms coming across to the straight from Kindergarten and Glenfalloch, who were well clear of the others. Kindergarten moved up brilliantly to assume command as they swung into line'; and quickly drew clear. He was allowed to come home well within himself, and a lale dab by Glenfalloch raised some excitement, but Kindergarten could have won by a comfortable margin Instead of the official half length. He was showing signs of soreness when he returned to the enclosure. There was a gap of five lengths to Lord Chancellor, who narrowly beat Rink for third, and another long gap to Don Quex and Lowry Bay. The two three-year-olds, Beau Cheval and Master Baron, were beaten off a long way from home. The consistent Langue d’Or scored handsomely in the Pearce Handicap from the Winter Cup winner Gulf Stream, who adopted his customary role of pacemaker, but was unlucky to be taken on in front bv Conspicuous, who worried Gulf Stream from the six furlongs to the home turn, and this probably cost him the race. The three-year-old Piccolo ran an excellent race to finish third, and Alethea was a good fourth. Tara King, the favourite, missed the jump out and made a fine re-* coverv to finish fifth, missing fourth place by a head. . . Kaltoa beat a small field in the Awatea Handicap. He was ker>t in check for the first half of the journey while Air Ace and Sir Bradbury made the pace, and after John o’ London and Salmi both looked possibilities at the last furlong, Kaltoa ran them down to win going away by two lengths, John o’ London was a handy second, narrowly beating Salmi, with Sir Bradbury fourth. Air Ace dropped out disappointingly after being prominent in the run to the straight. A 1 Sirat, a brother to the Guineas winner. Bridge Acre, created a fine impression when he won the Karitane Handicap for twq-year-olds. He was the unlucky runner in the Wellesley Stakes, and made no mistake/ on this occasion, responding brilliantly when asked for an effort in the last furlong and swamping his opponents over the final stages. He appears to be the best juvenile to have raced in this district since the season opened, and should have little difficulty in furthering his record in races for those of bis age. L Hare’s handling of Grand Coulee in the Trial Stakes was the subject of a judicial inquiry. Hare being suspended for one month for careless riding. Grand Coulee took Golden Souvenir s ground soon after turning for home and ruined the last-named’s chance.
