R.S.A. CLUB ROOMS
At the quarterly meeting of the Oamaru R.S.A. on Saturday night Mr J. Gordon asked for a report on the clubrooms proposal, saying that there was a lot of misundersanding in the country about the position. Mr A. C. Piper (secretary) reported that voluntary contributions in the bank amounted to £578 9s 2d, cash on hand £2 Is, a donation from the Excelsior Football Club that day amounted to £4B 8s Gd, and with £1035 9s lOd held by the Patriotic Committee, and with a credit from the suspense account, the actual cash position was £1723 8s 6d The Mayor (Mr J. C. Kirkness) said that, to the best of his knowledge, that statement of the funds was correct. From now on they would collect for the fund. The Patriotic Committee had given an undertaking to assist to the best of its ability to raise the £IO,OOO this year. > Any donations earmarked for the clubrooms had been paid to that fund. Contributions earmarked for the patriotic funds would continue to be placed in the patriotic funds, and if there was a surplus it would help next year, as it would mean that less would have to be collected. He hoped that as soon as the war loan campaign was over collecting would go fully ahead. Mr Gordon contended that from his experience in his district, where the greater proportion of the collection was earmarked for the clubrooms, they could have aimed at the full amount of £22,000 and got it. Once their service was no longer wanted, said Mr Gordon, the peonle would forget the men coming home. After further discussion, the matter lapsed.
