Mr S. Rice has been re-elected chairman of the Southland Education Board. He has now held this office for 12 years. Mr Alan Harper left by the through express on Saturday morning to take up his appointment as manager of the Wanganui branch of the D.I.C. Passengers who left for the north by the airliner on Saturday were Mrs M. Wilson, Mr and Mrs A. J. Smith, and Mr B Grindley for Christchurch, Mr J. A. Jenkins for Blenheim, Mr T. Pacey, Miss P. Gibbons, Miss D. Oliver, and Mr H. C. Little for Auckland.
Mr G. M. Beck, who has been appointed an inspecting engineer for the railways, has for the past six years been district railways engineer at Invercargill. Before that Mr Beck was assistant district engineer at Dunedin. Mr Beck joined the railways service 30 years ago in Wellington. He will in future be attached to the head office at Wellington, but his duties will take him to all Darts of the Dominion. He will be succeeded at Invercargill by Mr J. A. Reynolds, assistant district engineer at Dunedin.
