EXTENSION OF FRANCHISE
VIEWS OF WOMEN’S INSTITUTES (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Apl. 4. The Dominion Federation of New Zealand Women’s Institutes in a statement making clear its attitude on the Local Bodies Bill says that at the 1938 conference and again at the Dominion Council meeting in February, 1941, the following resolution was passed:— “That the Women’s Institute strongly protests against the disabilities of country women in standing or voting for local bodies and asks that the right of representation and franchise should be made eoual as between town and country.” “This was the only point in the Bill with which we were concerned,” the statement says. “In 1938 and 1941 the resolution was forwarded to the Prime Minister, who assured up that our representations would receive consideration whenever an amendment to the franchise was contemplated.”
