SOCIALISM

Sir, —“ Matilda’s ” first letter referred to tire American Communists and Marxian Socialism, the other to the legislation of our Labour Government, two entirely different subjects. So long as the means of production remain under private ownership there can be no Marxian Socialism. Our Labour Government is not a Socialist Government, and the present -Labour legislation is only an attempt to palliate the evils of the out-worn capitalist system, and to make it possible to bear the war-time drain on wealth and men. But no government could possibly prevent hardships and privations during a great war. Unemployment is no riddle to Socialists. Seventy years ago Marx showed that the number of unemployed must increase with every economic crisis as long as capitalism continues, not because men are becoming more incompetent., but because organisation, machinery, and science are becoming more competent.—l am, etc., H. Gow. Balclutha. January 26.
