SERVING IN ITALY
AMERICAN-BORN JAPANESE (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, Jan. 25. American-born Japanese serving in the United States Army have compiled such a brilliant record as . a combat force in Italy that the War Department has changed its policy and is now accepting them for selective service, says the New York Sun. Americanborn Japanese were previously not inducted because the army refused them. ■ , , Since the Pearl Harbour attack some Japanese-born Americans have served as an independent unit known as the 100th Battalion. The army decided not to use these men in the Pacific because their fellow-soldiers might suspect them in combat- against the Japanese forces, and because if any of them fell into Japanese hands they would undoubtedly be subjected to” hideout tortures. •
