THE GREYMOUTH BAR

ONE SHIP ENTERS PORT FIRST SINCE JANUARY 9 The port of Greymouth was on Tuesday night worked by shipping for the first time since January 9. The Rata arrived at 9 o’clock from Wellington to load about 850 tons bf coal for Nelson and Tarakohe. The depth on the bar on Tuesday was 18 feet 9 inches, and the Rata did not experience difficulty in working the port. . When she last crossed the bar, on January 9, the depth was only 15 feet 10 inches, the ship’s laden draught being 13 feet 6 inches. No other shallow-draught vessels are scheduled to arrive, nor is it possible for the usual coastal ships to work the port. They are all deep-draught craft, of which the Karu, drawing 15 feet 6 inches laden, takes the least water. The present good position is partly due to spring tides.
