CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL

AWARDED TO COLONEL KEARBY (Rec. 11 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jam 24. For shooting down six Japanese aircraft in one New Guinea action an American colonel has gained his country’s highest military decoration, the Congressional Medal. He is Colonel E. N. Ktarby, of Texas. He led a flight of four Allied fighters over Wewak, in north-east New Guinea, on October 11, to gain tactical information. When his small formation sighted 12 enemy bombers escorted by 36 fighters, Colonet Kearby, who had completed his reconnaissance mission, gave the signal to attack. In the resulting action he shot down six Japanese aircraft before recalling his scattered flight and leading them back to the base.
