CABINET AND THE PUBLIC SERVICE
Sir,—The recent developments concerning the Controller of Commercial Broadcasting turn one’s thoughts not to the fitness or otherwise of certain civil servants to hold their positions, but rather to the ability of Cabinet Ministers to justify the positions they themselves hold. Apart from the fact that the present Minister of Broadcasting is not an elected representative of the people, it seems at least that his actions must have had the blessing of the Prime Minister and other members of Cabinet, and if these men could endorse the measures taken bv him, and as quickly retract, then they stand condemned by their own actions as no longer fit to hold their elevated positions. That the wife of the controller should have been treated unjustly, in other words, victimised for the sole purpose that she is his wife, is a still deeper reflection on the pettiness, spite, and ineptitude that characterises so many of the actions of the present Cabinet.— I am, etc., Doubtful. March 5.
