SEA CADET CORPS

TRAINING OPERATIONS COURSE AT LYTTELTON „ Twelve ratings of the Navy League Sea Cadet Corps, who Will be in the charge of Lieutenant G. Robb and Sublieutenant S. R. Peterson, will leave to-morrow for Lyttelton, where they will take part in combined training at Quail Island with the Wellington and Canterbury divisions of the corps. This will be the first combined training operation carried out under the new designation of the New Zealand Navy League Sea Cade} Corps. The course will occupy 10 days. The boys, who have been specially selected from the Otago Division, will undergo training in boatwork, comprising the sailing and rowing of surface whalers. In addition, a motor boat will be operated by the cadets as a duty vessel between’ Lyttelton and the island. Instruction will also be given in practical seamanship and signalling, and musketry training will be undertaken. There will be approximately 100 cadets in the camp, which will be divided into four watches. The commanding officer will be Lieutenant E. Collins (Canterbury), and the executive officer Lieutenant G. Robb (Otago). The camp coxswain will be Cadet Chief Petty Officer N. Roydbouse, who is the only Sea Cadet holding such rank in the corps in New Zealand. The first parade of the local division will be held at the headquarters in Dowling street on January 28, and will take the form of a rehearsal for the inspection by the Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, which will be held the following week. Week-end training on the Waireka will be resumed towards the end of February. A large number of cadets have already qualified for their swimming certificates for 440 yards, and the instructional classes, which are conducted by the area physical welfare officer, Mr R. O. Johnson, will be resumed shortly.
