LAWRENCE
Patriotic Committee.—A well-attended meeting of the Lawrence Patriotic Committee was held on Monday evening. The Mayor (Mr W. J. Suters), who presided, reported that the borough quota of £I2OO for the All Purposes Appeal had been exceeded by £l6B 16s Bd. The total contributions to date amounted to £2919 3s 7d. There was a credit balance of £ 15* 14s 5d in the Soldiers’ Welcome Home and Social Fund. Since the last meeting of the committee advice had been received from the Tuapeka Zone Committee that the borough quota had been increased from £I2OO to £I3OO. This decision had been made without consent from the Dunedin authorities or without the authority of the zone meeting held at Rae's Junction. Although the quota had been exceeded, the Mayor said, the principle of expecting “ the willing horse to carry an increased load ” was wrong, and should be objected to. It was decided to hold a gala day in aid of patriotic funds on Boxing Day, and a small committee was formed to make preliminary arrangements for the function. VJA.D.
