THE KOITERANGI TRAGEDY
COMPASSIONATE GRANTS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 15.
The financial details which are now available show that the Police Department paid the funeral expenses of its officers who were killed while on duty at Koiterangi, near Hokitika, at the time of the tragedy last October, the amount being £146. In addition, the following compassionate grants have been made;—To the widow and children of Constable E. M. Best, £1000; to the widow of Sergeant W. Cooper. £750; to the widow and children of Mr R. J. M. Coulson, a Home Guardsman, £1000; and to the widow and 'children of another Home Guardsman. Mr G G. T. Hutchison, £IOOO.
The Koiterangi tragedy began at the home of Stanley Graham, farmer, on October 8, 1941, when Sergeant Cooper and Constables F. W. Jordon, P. C Tulloch and E. M. Best were killed. Mr Coulson and Mr Hutchison were fatally shot the following night in an endeavour to apprehend Graham, who was fatally shot on October 20.
