EDUCATION IN OTAGO

MONTHLY MEETING OF BOARD The monthly meeting of file Otago Education Board yesterday was attended by Messrs James Wallace (chairman), D. C. Cameron, W. R. Brugh, N. Colquhoun, I. Fraser, W. M. Cooper, and W. Jacobsen. The chairman reported that ho had granted the application of the Wallaki Hospital Board to install water and drainage connections at the Middle School, Oamaru. The building would bo used only In the event of an actual emergency. The application of the Vincent Hospital Board for the use of the Alexandra District High School in the event of an emergency was granted. Appeals tor Teachers

Advice was received from the School Committees’ Association that it had endorsed the board’s action in appealing for teachers, as recommended by the department, and that it, had approved of a resolution requesting the Minister to declare teaching an essential Industry. A letter was also received from the Auckland Board stating that 530 of its teachers were now In camp, and that a number of schools were closed at present because no teachers were available. It had decided to appeal for teachers called up in the last ballot (54 in number). The board had written to the department urging that the teaching profession should now be declared an essential service. In connection with the suggestion that Training College students under the age of 21 should be allowed to do three months’ military service annually, the department advised having discussed the matter with the National Service Board. The decision arrived at was that under present conditions the scheme outlined could not be put into operation. If conditions should alter for the better, consideration would be given to the proposals. Additional Accommodation

A request from residents in the Casa Nova School district that four rooms should be added to the school was proseated to the hoard by the chairman of the Oamaru North School, Mr S. S.vinon. Mr Symcn explained that because of the

limited capacity of the school about. DO children were required to travel up to a mile to attend Oaniaru North. The Casa Nova School was in the cenitc of the Government housing area, and the trend of population was in that direction. —The board instructed its architect (o report on the advisability of adding one room to Casa Nova and io lake into consideration the provision of a second exit from the school. Sherriff, sole teacher at Merino Downs; Raymond S. Jenkins, sole teacher at Momona; Jessie E. W. McNicoll, assistant at Arthur Street, Mrs Marjorie A. Gibbs, assistant at Caversham,
