WAITAKI OLD GIRLS’ ASSOCIATION OAMARU BRANCH The president (Miss C. Copland) occupied the chair at the annual meeting of the Oamaru branch of the Waitaki Old Girls’ Association. The annual report and balance sheet, showing that the year had been a very successful one, were adopted. Letters of appreciation from nurses overseas, who had received parcels from the association, were read. The following were elected to the committee;—Mrs J. Meldrum, Misses F. Miller, M. Familton, C. Copland, I. Gunn. K. N. Wilson, D. Cayford, B. Thomson, u. Meldrum, and B. Thomas. The election of delegates to the Dominion Executive resulted as follow* President, secretary. Mrs A. Robertson; Misses V. Irwin, K. M. Wilson, C. Herron, and B. Robertson. Miss C. Herron was re-elected auditor. Following the business meeting, an enjoyable and varied programme was contributed by the following members: —Miss Vera Slater (piano solo); Mrs McCallum, Misses M. Familton. D. Cayford, and W. Slater (songs); Mrs H. Kent (recitation); Misses M. Familton and D. Cayford (duet); Misses M. Lindsay and E. M. Will (readings); Mesdames W. J. Davies and H. Kent (play). “LOVERS LEAP” SATURDAY AND MONDAY NIGHTS The box plan for Philip Johnston's celebrated three-act comedy, “ Lovers Leap, is filling rapidly at Begg's, and early booking is recommended for the best seats. Witty dialogue and ludicrous situations characterise this light-hearted comedy, and it can be expected, therefore. that the Opera House will be crowded on Saturday (race night) and Monday night. The public can depend on a smart and polished performance by the Little Theatre Society, which has a long list of pronounced successes. Mr K. C. McDonald is the producer, and the cast is an experienced and capable one. The net proceeds will go to the All Purposes Appeal, and there is no charge for booking the 2s 6d dress circle and stalls at Begg’s. The overture and entr acre will be played by a full orchestra under the direction of Mr R. Meldrum. PERSONAL Mr Colin Taylor has been appointed musical examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. Mrs H. Mclntyre, formerly of Oamaru but now residing in Auckland, is at present visiting friends in Oamaru prior to going on to Dunedin. Prior to their departure from Oamaru for Gisborne, Mr and Mrs J. L. South were the guests of active and honorary members of the Oamaru Little Theatre Society at a social evening. Mr K. C. McDonald referred to the great loss the society would experience in the departure of Mr and Mrs South, and said that Mr South had been three times president of the societv, which under his guidance had gained an important place in the community. A presentation was made by Mr McDonald, and others who spoke of the guests’ sterling worth were Messrs A. F. Woodgate, G. Restieaux, and D. V. G. Smith. Mr South made a suitable reply. Two one-act plays, " Red Wax, by Edward Percy, and ‘‘The Bosuns Mate, by W. W. Jacobs, were read, and musical items were contributed by Miss McQuade, and Mr and Mrs South. The accompaniments were played by Mr A. Gibb. At the Kurow Returned Services Subassociation’s annual meeting, the secretary was instructed to write to Mr L. Shir res, expressing sympathy with him in his illness. and the hope that he would be speedily restored to health. Ministerial The Minister of Health (Mr A. H. Nordmeyer) is spending a few days in Oamaru and will meet constituents in the Social Security offices to-night.

OAMARU RACES WINTER MEETING After the recent i-ains the track at the Oamaru racecourse should be in capital order for the Oamaru Jockey Club’s winter meeting on Saturday. Acceptances have easily constituted a record for the club, and with large fields three place dividends are assured in every race. The first race is timed to start at 12.20 p.m., and the principal open event is the Oamaru Winter Cup, of £3OO, which has drawn a field of 16, including some of the best horses in commission in the South Island. The Grange Handicap, the six-furlong sprint, has also attracted a strong field of 16. including the Southland galloper, Bashful Lady, who so far has won in her last five starts. Included in the programme is the two-year-old trotting classic, the Oamaru Juvenile Stakes, of £SOO, which was taken over from the Oamaru Trotting Club. This event is attracting widespread attention in trotting circles, and is a forerunner to the New Zealand Sapling Stakes to be run at Ashburton next month. The win and place totalisator system will operate. R.S.A. KUROW SUB-ASSOCIATION Mr A. Don (president) was in the chair at the annual meeting of the Kurow Returned Services’ Sub-association. He congratulated members on the strong financial position of the sub-association, and on the good work accomplished during the year. It had been decided during the year to send parcels overseas, and for this purpose £135 17s 8d had been collected. He thanked all those who had assisted, especially Mr and Mrs Shannan for their hospitality in providing a room '"oMrMSf&ora .’SPSS. d wishes were received from Mr J. S Dodds (president of the Oamaru R.S.A.), and Mr W. E. Shannan, on behalf of Mr Keith Cameron (Dunedin R.S.A.). - Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the relatives of returned men who had died during the year. . ITEMS OF INTEREST IN AND ABOUT TOWN Tides— To-day at Oamaru high tides will bd at 2.26 a.m. and 2.46 p.m. Scottish Dances.— Saturday being race day. the North Otago Scottish Society has made special arrangements for the dance in the Scottish Hall that night The council of the society has decided to devote the proceeds of the dance on the following Saturday. May 23, which is Victory Fair Day in Oamaru, to the All Purposes A Gift'of Wireless Acknowledged—The gift of a radio transmitting set was recently made for the use of the Royal New Zealand Air Force by Mr Neil C. Gilchrist, of ” Brookfield. The gift has been acknowledged in a letter from the Prime Minister (Mr Fraser), who has expressed gratification at Mr Gilchrists generous response to the appeal for radio apparatus by handing over the transmitting set as a gift. Mr Fraser added that it would be some satisfaction to Mr Gilchrist to know that the set had already been installed and was ready for use in connection with the expansion of the Royal New Zealand Air Force for the defence of the country. The set is a very efficient apparatus, and Mr Gilchrist has letters from listeners in many parts of the world acknowledging the receipt of messages sent out by him. AMUSEMENTS Majestic Theatre.—” Unfinished Business,” to be shown to-night, leavens romance with comedy, and features Robert Montgomery and Irene Dunne. Opera House.—The double bill to be shown to-night will comprise Sailor s Lady,” a nautical comedy, together with the thrilling drama “ Rags to Riches.
