BURNSIDE MARKET

AVERAGE ENTRIES FORWARD LITTLE CHANGE IN VALUES Average entries were forward in most of the sections at the Burnside sale yesterday. Fat ewes, which were in rather over-supply, were a shade easier in value, but wethers maintained recent rates. Lambs met with a ready market, while baconers and porkers could be quoted as firm to a shade better. Fat Cattle.—This entry comprised 335 head, against 320 last week. There was a fair showing of good-quality ox, including an exceptionally good truck or two from Central Otago. The standard generally, however, was of moderate quality, with a fairly large yarding of cows and heifers. Included in these were a few pens of exceptional quality. The market for good-quality ox was firm to 10s a head better than the previous sale, with little or no change for the medium and ordinary sorts. Good-quality cows and heifers also met with an improved market, and in cases these were 20s a head above last week’s ruling rates. Quotations: —Extra prime bullocks, to £lB 17s 6d; prime, £ls 2s 6d to £l6 7s 6d; medium. £ll 2s 6d to £l2 12s 6d; light, £8 7s 6d to £9 12s 6d; extra prime cows and heifers, to £ll 17s 6d; prime, £7 12s 6d to £8 12s sd; medium, £5 12s 6d to £6 12s 6d; light, from £3 15s.

Fat Sheep.—The entry was about equal to that of last week, numbering approximately 2000. There was a very fair showing of prime-quality ewes, while good-quality wethers were not in oversupply. In the earlier stages the sale showed little change on that of a week ago, and this was maintained until halfway through the sale, when there was a noticeable easing. This continued to the finish, a number of pens being passed unsold. Wethers, however, maintained fair values. Quotations:—Extra heavywethers, to 36s 9d; prime, 27s 6d to 30s; medium, 25s to 26s 3d;' light, from 20s; prime young ewes, to 255; prime, 17s 6d to 20s; medium, 14s 6d to 16s; light, 13s to 14s Sd. Fat Lambs.—The number of lambs offered was 2000, the quality generally being mixed. With the improved schedule of last week, however, export buyers were operating freely up to their limits. Apart from this, the sale was very much on a level with that of a week ago. As a matter of fact, the yarding mainly comprised lighter sorts, this being due to the advance of the season. Quotations: — Extra prime lambs, to 31s; prime, 27s 6d to 28s 9d; medium, 25s 9d to 26s 9d; light. 21s 9d to 23s 9d. Fat Pigs.—There was again a fairly heavy entry in the bacon section, but porkers were forward in fewer numbers. Values for good-class baconers were fully maintained, and the sale throughout was an even one. Baconers which did not particularly suit butchers did not, however, meet with the same inquiry. Porkers were in good demand, and showed an improved tone to the extent of 3s and 4s a head on last week’s rates. Quotations;—Best baconers, £4 10s to £5; medium, £3 5s to £3 13s; best porkers, to £3 12s; medium. £2 10s to £3 3s; lighter sorts, from £2. There was a small entry of store pigs, mostly weaners. Values were a shade better than at recent sales, best weaners making from 17s to 20s, medium sorts 14s to 16s, slips 25s to 275. Store Cattle.—The penning in this section was not of a very attractive nature, being comprised mostly of mediocre sorts. The sale’was easier throughout. One pen of three and four-year-old bullocks made to £9 11s, while three-year-olds made from £8 to £8 10s, Cows and indifferent sorts were in rather weak demand. There was a fair entry of vealers, and these sold at rates equal to last week’s. There was a fair showing of good suckers,' but generally the pennings were of medium descriptions. Best sorts made up to £6 10s. good suckers £3 2s 6d to £4 2s 6d. and medium £2 2s 6d to £2 12s 6d.
