BEARDED PILOTS

YOUNG AIRMEN’S VOW SYDNEY, May 8. At one fighter sector in North Australia young pilots are so eager to have a “ go ” at the Japanese that they have taken a solemn vow not to shave until they have shot down at least one enemy. A number of them took the vow early last month. The lull since April 5 in Japanese bombings now can be judged almost as well by the length of their beards as by the calendar. One pilot—naturally the most handsome of the squadron—took a vow in another way. He is refraining from growing a beard because the prettiest girl in the only nurse-staffed hospital in this area is his sweetheart. So he has given up smoking and beer instead until he shoots down one Japanese. In spite of their vows, the pilots do not underrate the enemy.
