ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
KNOCKED DOWN BY HORSE Mr Donald Brown, a middle-aged married man, was admitted to: the Public Hospital at 5.15 p.m. yesterday suffering from a broken collar-bone, received when he was knocked down by a horse at the Taieri. DEATH FROM FOOTBALL INJURIES (P.A.) AUCKLAND, May 8. As the result of injuries suffered while playing football at a military training area, Private Maxwell Janies Stewart, aged 18, son of Mr J. Stewart, of Devonport, died in the Auckland Hospital to-day. He was admitted to hospital early on Thursday morning after having been carried for a considerable distance by motor ambulance. His injuries included a fracture of the neck. Prior to his • enlistment, Private Stewart was employed as a linotype apprentice on the staff of the New Zealand Herald. He was well-known in sporting circles in Auckland.
PEDESTRIAN KILLED (P.A.) AUCKLAND, May 8. Two women returning from choir practice were struck by a motor lorry near the overhead railway bridge at Papatoetoe about 9.30 last night. One died later. She was Mrs Ethel Heald, aged 49. The other, Mrs Margaret Sausey, aged 49. suffered head injuries and concussion, and her condition today was serious.
