WATER SUPPLY
IMPROVEMENTS RECOMMENDED The carrying out of additional work involving an expenditure of ever £IB,OOO in order to improve the city s water supply is recommended m the report which will be submitted by the Water Committee at the meeting of the City Council on Monday night. The report states that the city engineer has submitted proposals foi improving the supply lines to storage reservoirs in the Leith catchment with a view to taking advantage of al. usable water during freshets. The proposals include improvements in Ross Creek and Morrison’s Creek already authorised by the council. The works, briefly, are as follows: (a) Continuation of the west brarich supply pips line to Sullivan dam. This line at present discharges direct into trunk mains. The estimated cost ot this work is £4OOO. (b) A new higher intake and pipe line at Morrison s Creek, connecting to the Waitati-Leith trunk mains, at an estimated cost of £3500. (c) A pine line from Mornson’s Creek via Tanner road saddle to the Ross Creek reservoir, at an estimated cost of £9517. (d) The construction of a higher intake at Ross Creek, together with an additional pipe line, at a cost of £llOO. The effect of these works, the report states, will be to impound all surplus usable water during freshets, thus assisting the replenishment of the storage reservoirs after continued dry spells. The necessary pipes for these works will be obtained from stock and recovery from various pipe lines which will be rendered unnecessary on completion of the works set out above. The committee recommends that authority be granted to proceed with these, works immediately, and that the cost be financed as follows: (a) and tb). a total of £7500 to be charged to the loan account: (cl and (d). a total of £10,617 to oe charged to the current year’s revenue allocations.
