SHORTAGE OF RUBBER

SERIOUS IN AMERICA WASHINGTON, May 6. Senator R. Reynolds, chairman of the Senate Military Committee, told the press: “Several Government officials gave testimony in a closed session, saying .that the lack of rubber had become perilous from a military standpoint.” Senator Reynolds predicted that the Government would be forced to take over every ounce of rubber not used for essential purposes.

Senator W. R. Austin said no new rubber would be available for civilian purposes for a year. Seven high-ranking officials urged the committee to approve legislation authorising the requisitioning of automobiles and tyres. Senator Reynolds said people with more than five tyres per car would be compelled to transfer them to the Government,
