WHEAT PRODUCTION

APPEAL TO OTAGO FARMERS At the present time the production of sufficient wheat to enable New Zealand to be self-supporting is a vital necessity. In order that this quantity of wheat may be assured the sowing of 300,000 acres will be necessary. The Dunedin Council of Primary Production has pledged itself to support the appeal for the sowing of the required acreage in the territory with which it is concerned. The counties embraced by this council are Waihemo, Waikoualti, Maniototo. Taieri, Bruce, Clutha, and Tuapeka. The total area which it is hoped will be sown in wheat in these counties is a little less than 12.000 acres, about one-twenty-flfth of the total quota for New Zealand. It is fully appreciated that some farmers may And it difficult either to increase their normal wheat acreage or to grow wheat as a new venture. For this reason Mr Alan Grant, of Waimate, a member of the Wheat Committee, has been asked by the Minister of Supply to visit a number of centres selected by the Dunedin Primary Production Council with the object of addressing farmers on the subject of wheat production. Mr Grant will be accompanied by members of the Primary Production Council, and will address meetings of farmers as follows: Momona, 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 12; Balclutha, 2 p.m., Wedenesday, May 13; Greenfield, 8 p.m.. Wednesday, May 13; Milton, 8 p.m., Thursday, May 14.
