ENEMY SHIPS TORPEDOED
ATTACK IN MEDITERRANEAN (Rec. 7 p.m.) RUGBY, Feb. B.' British naval torpedo bombers again made a highly successful. attack on shipping in the central Mediterranean on the night of February 6 and 7. Two supply ships, fully loaded and on their way to North Africa, were, torpedoed. The pilots found the larger ship protected by two destroyers. Immediately the warships realised that an attack ' was about to take place, they opened up with their light anti-aircraft guns and began to lay smoke screens. Diving to 30 feet above the # water, the first pilot released a torpedo. In spite of the smoke screen, he saw it hit the vessel, and a large column of smoke rise from the hull. A second pilot swooped to attack the ship. He was not sure if he scored a hit, but another pilot reported seeing a torpedo explode, against the ship’s side. -«¥he smaller vessel was guarded by a destroyer which put up a vigorous barrage of anti-aircraft gunfire. After one torpedo had scored a hit a fire broke out on board.
