COMMENT ON THE RACING

(Special) INVERCARGILL, Feb. 7. The Winton Cup was won in convincing style by the favourite, Anglo-Irish, who thus made amends for his defeats in cup events during the holidays. Sailing Lady raced away to a commanding lead at the end of a couple of furlongs, but AngloIrish caught her three furlongs from home and led into, the straight, closely attended by Wild Career, Spanish Lad, and Heidelberg who had moved up fast across the top.' Anglo-Irish finished strongly; and passed the post with a couple of lengths, to- spare from Wild Career, who beat Spanish Lad by half a head. There was a gap of three lengths to Heidelberg, and Sailing Lady was next. Spanish Lad was well placed all the way. Had he been more vigorously ridden in the run home he might have pjayed a bigger part in the finish. Night Pal ran a bad race, and Craiglea was beaten a long way from home. Y ". "'; Fleet Street soon ran to the front in the Frying Handicap and stayed on well to win narrowly, from the, favourite, Symbol, who missed the jump out. Waitoru was finishing on in third place a length away, alnd Gold Flight, who was slow away from the barrier, was close Up fourth. Boa-I form was knocked right back in the early stages of the race. Sea Lady and Phalanx failed to stay on after holding prominent positions. V Making his first appearance as a steeplechaser, Anglo-French was always one of the leaders in the Winton Steeplechase, and stayed on too well for Attire. Spendthrift, who was. bracketed with the win*-■ ner, was close : \ up third, and doing, it well. These three were the only horses in the picture over the last half mile. Remembo was going particularly well in the lead with Anglo-French, when he dipped on landing over the brush fence, with a little over half a mile to go, and dropped his rider. Gold Robe fell about halfway through the , race, and Prince Flaneur fell at the sod wall, about seven furlongs from home, when a long way back. Wingatui stables collected two divisions of the Trial Stakes with the three-year--old gelding Sir Saladin (Salmagundi—Cetchela), and the three-year-old filly, Help Mate (Man's Pal—lmpertinence). Both won practically from end to end. Sing Sing notched her fourth win on end in as many starts when she won the Benmore Handicap after a thrilling struggle in. the straight with her stable mate, Irish Ruler. It was an outstanding performance for the three-year-old filly under her 9.3.
