HITLER'S PLAN FOR VICHY OVERTHROW OF PETAIN (Rec. 1.30 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 5. The Times correspondent on the German frontier says that neutral observers in Berlin draw the conclusion that Hitler's plan for the overthrow of Marshal Petain's regime consists of provoking civil strife in France, with Germany throwing her entire weight on the side of the collaborators—M. Laval, M. Beat, and M. Doroit. The Times correspondent on the French frontier says that it is reported from Lyons that units of the Todt organisation which are stationed in southern France have been sent north. The same report says that the Germans in occupied and unoccupied France are collecting all the brass plates and implements from French railway coaches, and brass from locomotives, even including name plates.
KING CHRISTIAN THREAT TO ABDICATE (Rec. 1.30 p.m.) LONDON. Jan. 5. The Stockholm correspondent of the Daily Express stated that King Christian threatened to abdicate if Germany's demand for the application of the Nuremburg anti-Jewish laws were forced on the Danish Government. The German Minister in Copenhagen a fortnight ago asked for the application of the anti-Jewish laws in Denmark. M. Stauning took the request to the King, who refused to consider it. Cabinet subsequently voted 6 to 3 against its application. The Germans demanded that King Christian should over-rule the Cabinet. The King replied that he would not go beyond the original agreement forced on Denmark when the Germans marched in. He added that if Hitler wanted to persecute the Jews in Denmark he would relinquish the throne.
