OBITUARY

SIR ALFRED YOUNG (Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON. Jan. 5. The death is announced of Sir Alfred Young, at Capetown. Sir Alfred Young was born in 1865 and filled various administrative posts in Seychelles, Nyassaland and Trinidad. Later he was the Chief Justice of Fiji and Chief Judicial Commissioner for the Western Pacific. MR W. J. O'KANE The death occurred at Gore recently of Mr William John O'Kane, a member of a well-known district family. Born at Clinton in 1889, he was the second son of the late Mr and Mrs D. O'Kane, and received his education at the Clinton School. In 1904 the family moved to Gore, and shortly after, the deceased took up employment there. He enlisted for service and he went overseas with the Seventh Reinforcements. During the Battle of the Somme in 1916 he was severely wounded, and after a year in hosDital he was invalided home to New Zealand. The injuries he received practically incapacitated him for life. He was one of the foundation members of the Pioneer Football Club at Gore, and in the early days of the club's existence he was a prominent playing member. He was also an enthusiastic member of the Gore Returned Services' Association. Mr O'Kane did not marry, and he is survived by two brothers and three sisters. MR OTIS SKINNER (Rec. 7 p.m.) NEW YORK, Jan. 5. The death is announced of Mr Otis Skinner, the American actor, aged 83. Mr Otis Skinner made his first appearance on the stage in 1877 and starred in scores of productions. He was also seen in a talking film version of " Kismet." A daughter, Miss Cornelia Otis Skinner, has proved equally gifted. MRS M. G. McGRATH (P.A.) NAPIER, Jan. 6. The death took place yesterday at Waipawa of Mrs M. G. McGrath, of Wellington, the widow of Police Superintendent J. A. McGrath. She was 80 years of age and was well known throughout New Zealand for her work for the St. Vincent de Paul Society and other charitable activities. The interment will take place at Wellington to-morrow. The deceased had gone to Waipawa to assist at the silver jubilee of the ordination of her son, feather McGrath, of Temuka.
