CRICKET

GRADE MATCHES FAIR SCORING ON SODDEN GROUNDS Grade cricket was played in Dunedin on Saturday in dull but mild weather, and on grounds that were showing the effects of heavy rain during the week and a steady drizzle on Saturday morning. Fortunately, the weather cleared at midday, and each of the four First Grade matches was begun according to schedule, and produced a definite result. There was s.o high scoring, and all of the matches were won by comfortable margins. The day's results were as follows: Carisbrook B, 187 for seven wickets, beat Old Boys, 104. Grange, 161, beat University, 90. Kaikorai, 160, beat Dunedin, 93. Albion-Y.M.C.A., 153 for eight wickets, beat Carisbrook A, 126 for seven wickejs. Carisbrook B was not seriously extended to beat Old Boys at Carisbrook. The home side took first use of a wicket that was lifeless but true, and the example set by R. O. Talbot, who batted briskly, was so well followed that the 135 minutes of batting time yielded 187 runs for seven wickets. D. W. Monaghan, a former Christ's College left-hand batsman, who is in camp at Forbury Park, confirmed the good impression he had made on the first day of the season by scoring a sound 73 befoie he was out in the last over before the adjournment. Then J. H. Nimmo set about getting rid of the Old Boys' batsmen so effectively that he took the first eight wickets and finished with an analysis of eight for 19 off 15 overs—an excellent performance on a dead wicket. Old Boys scored 104, and the last wicket fell half an hour before the scheduled time for drawing stumps. Considering the soft state of Logan Park No. 2 ground, Grange did well to put on a total of 161. and dismiss University for 90. Grange started badly, and the first two wickets fell before a run had been scored. Knight and Powell then made a good stand, Knight's 74 being a particularly bright effort. Not the least attractive feature of the partnership was the batsmen's smart running between the wickets. Toomey, who was top scorer for University, hit out freely for 32. C. J. Elmes showed some of his old-time form with the ball to finish with the good average of five for 36, three of his wickets being taken In one over.

Kaikorai and Dunedin met at Tonga Park on a wicket which was very slow. Kaikorai secured a well-merited victory, scoring 160 runs, of which R. Jaffray (52) and C. Welham (47) were tho principal scorers. G. J. Robertson earned the best average for Dunedin, securing six wickets for 41 runs. Dunedin was out for 93, F. Wedlake (24) and T. Rodgerson (19) being the only batsmen to make a stand"'against the accurate bowling of G. McGregor, who took five for 41, and E. Rennick, two for 34. During* the day five sixes were scored.

Albion-Y.M.C.A. met Carisbrook A at the Logan Park No. 1 ground, the game resulting in a win for the former. Miller, Allen and Smith gave Albion a good start, and they were Yeally the mainstay of their side. The bowling of the Carisbrook team did not seem to be very dangerous, but this would no doubt be accounted for b\ the dead wicket, which also became badlv cut up as the afternoon wore on. The opening Carisbrook batsmen were not enterprising, and the brightest batting for the side was given during the partnership of the veteran McMullan and Gaylor. who were batting well when time was called. Lankford Smith, Claridge and Lumsden hit sixes, and it requires some strength to secure a six on the Logan Park ground, which is actually larger than Carisbrook. Allen bowled unchanged during the afternoon. Details: CARISBROOK B v. OLD BOYS CARISBROOK B First Innings R. O. Talbot, c Harraway, b McArley 31 A. Jack, b McArley 8 D. W. Monaghan. c G. H.
