RHINELAND TARGETS

BOMBER COMMAND RAID ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT (Rec. 11 p.m.) RUGBY. Sept. 18, It is officially stated that Bomber Command aircraft attacked targets in the Rhineland again last night. It is officially stated that on Wednesday afternoon two squadrons of Blenheims of the Bomber Command, escorted by strong formations of fighters, attacked the power plant at Mazingarbe, near Bethune. Bombs were seen to hit the target and fires were caused. Enemy fighters were unable to prevent the attack, and six of them are known to have been destroyed by our fighters. One Blenheim and seven of our fighters were lost, but one of our fighter pilots was later rescued from the sea by the R.A.F. sea rescue service.

In the course of the rescue enemy fighters which attempted to interfere were driven off by one of our fighter patrols, and one enemy plane was shot down.
