A RUSSIAN VICTORY NORTH-EAST OF SMOLENSK LONDON, Sept. 17. This morning's Moscow communique, which reports that fierce fighting continued along the entire front during the nigjjt, makes no reference to the battle for Leningrad. The Russians, however, report an important victory northeast of Smolensk, where large German forces were surrounded. There is no confirmation of 1 a German claim that a heavy attack has been launched on the LeningradMoscow railway. THE EGYPTIAN BORDER MILITARY ACTIVITY LONDON, Sept. 17. It was stated in London to-day that although there has been military activity on the Egyptian border recently there is no indication of preparations for immediate largescale operations by the Axis forces. The recent activity has been in the nature of a reconnaissance measure. BRITISH BOMBERS TARGETS AT KARLSRUHE LONDON, Sept, 17. R.A.F. bombers last night attacked targets at Karlsruhe and elsewhere in western Germany. The docks at Le- Havre were again heavily bombed. No planes are missing as a result of .these operations. In an action off the Netherlands coast yesterday British aircraft destroyed one enemy fighter and sank a patrol vessel. A German bomber was shot down in small-scale activity over Britain last night. Little damage is reported and there were no casualties.
