KILLED IN ACTION
DETAILS OF CAPTAIN LYON'S DEATH TRIBUTE BY PRIME MINISTER (0.C.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 17. The most detailed description yet given of the manner in which Captain \V. J. Lyon, the former member for Waitemata. was killed in Crete, was provided by the Prime Minister, Mr P. Frrser. in the House of Representatives to-day. Because he had been abroad when the House paid a tribute to Captain Lyon. Mr Fraser was given leave to pay his own tribute to-day. Mr Fraser said he had learned of Ccptain Lyon's death from some of the first men to be evacuated from Crete to Egypt. He met the men the day after they arrived at a camp 10 or 15 miles from Alexandria and heard of Captain Lyon's death from men of his company. The Prime Minister said he had made an effort to get full particulars and learned that one man had seen Captain Lyon fall. Captain Lyon's colonel had instructed him to rally his men for a forward movement, and at this stage Caotain Lyon called, " Come on. bovs," and fell with a bullet in his neck.
A tribute was paid by Mr Fraser to Captain Lyon's gallantry and efficiency and to the menner in which he had won the esteem and confidence of his men. His relationship with the men under his command was typical of that existing between the New Zealand officers and men.
