A number of street lighting circuits in the outer areas of the Waimain County will be disconnected until the present lighting restrictions are removed. The Waimairi County Council has taken this action in compliance with the requirements of the Emergency Precautions Scheme.

With six geysers playing, one of the finest displays of thermal activity at Whakarewarewa reserve for many years was witnessed last Monday. Notable among the geysers was Wsikite. which has been active for the past week after a quiescence of over two years. Pohutu and several of the smaller geysers were also active, and on several occasions gave simultaneous displays. Waikite began to play at the beginning of last week, and has continued intermittently with displays of up to 40ft lasting for about five minutes.

Describing a visit to Cairo, a Hamilton soldier in the Middle East says he helped his mate buy his mother a small phial of concentrated jasmine scent. " She will have scent to remind her of her son for months, as it surely is powerful," he adds. "The shopkeeper slapped various scents all over us, and at Dresent my left sleeve is Ashes of Roses while my light sleeve is Mystery of the Desert. Ashes of Roses wafts up from my handkerchief. Talk about scent! I hope it wears off soon, for everyone for yards around must know it is on us, and think we applied it ourselves!" A Somerfield resident had a novel experience recently. She heard a clucking noise proceeding from her bedroom. On entering, she discovered a hen perched Oh the dressing table. Lying on the bedspread was a newlaid egg. The hen-bad entered through a low window which was open at the bottom and left its gift in the first convenient place. No decision has yet been reached about the motto that is to adorn the new Southland Museum building. One suggestion is that it should be in Maori; another that it should be in Latin. A novel point of view was expressed in a letter which the director of the' museum (Mr J. H. Sorensen) received from a friend. He wrote: " How many people in Southland would look twice at a Latin motto compared with the number who would be interested enough to ask the meanins of a Maori one? An amusing story was told by his Honor Mr Justice Northcroft, speaking to members of the Commercial Travellers and Warehousemen's Association in Christchurch on Saturday night. It concerned a case heard in one of the smaller towns in the Dominion. The first witness gave his name, age, and calling, and explained that he was from Hope. The second witness did the same, but the third. with no beating about the bush, gave her name and explained that she was a spinster of Hope. Having once lost the key of the padlock with which he secured his bicycle, and having it cut off, a young Christchurch man has since merely closed a padlock round the chain and driving wheel, without locking it. Some keen eye, however, detected the bluff as the bicycle stood in a kerbside stand on a recent evening, but, instead of the cycle, it was the padlock that was stolen. The latest shipment of English bicycle inner tubes to reach Christchurch has arrived minus valve.-fittings, the manufacturers explaining that these will have to be inserted on- a replacement basis. This means that cyclists buying new tubes will have to surrender the old tube so that the valve fitting may be used again. "That this executive protests against continuance of the manufacture of margarine while there is a "surplus of butter in the Dominion," was a remit from the Woodlands branch which gained approval at the latest meeting of the Southland Executive of the Farmers' Union. The meeting also protested against inclusion of the South Island in the Dominion cheese crate pool, which was bringing higher costs to Southland.
