BALCLUTHA Personal. —Mrs J. H. Stevenson, the former Mayoress, and her daughter Margaret have returned to Balclutha after spending some months in Dunedin.—Flight Lieutenant Stevenson is now at Ohakea Aerodrome, Palmerston North.—ln the Army School (officers) at Trentham are to be found three ex-Balclutha ministers (the Revs. W. H. Greenslade, O. T. Baragwanath and H. Boyd-Bell), who have enlisted for service overseas as chaplains. The coincidence is heightened by the fact that in the same mess are to be found Padre Thomas Pearson (Balclutha) and Pilot Officer McSkimming (Benhar). Obituary.—Mrs Sarah Burleigh, whose death occurred at Riverton on Friday, was a former resident of Milton. She was born at Stoke-on-Trent, England, 75 years ago, and came to New Zealand with her parents in the ship Lady Joycln at the age of seven years. She attended school in Milton and about 57 years ago married Mr Robert Burleigh. The couple lived in Central Otago for some time, and in 1914 they took over a private hotel in Milton. After the death of her husband, Mrs Burleigh removed to Dunedin, and about six years ago she went to Wyndham to reside with a son. Personal. —Private Owen Hughes, who has returned from Australia after undergoing an advanced infantry course, is at present spending a few days' leave with his relatives at Milton.—Lieutenant D. J. Sumpter left last week-end for the Waiouru camp to join the special armoured unit.

Dance at Lovell's Flat.— On Thursday last the Lovell's Flat railway staff held another of their popular dances in the Lovell's Flat Public Hall. Approximately 40 couples from the surrounding district danced to the music of the Ambassador's and Black Cat orchestras. The hall was tastefully decorated for the occasion, and Monte Carlo, lucky spot and novelty dances were a feature of the entertainment. TERRITORIAL SERVICE APPEALS AT BALCLUTHA. The following additional appeals for exemption from territorial service came before the Southland Man-power Committee at Balclutha on Monday. M. Carradus was appealed for by Bell Bros., fellmongers, of Milton.—Dismissed, the appellant not to be called before October 31, 1941. W. E. Carruthers was appealed for by J. Carruurers, Clinton.—Withdrawn on condition that the reservist does not go into territorial camp until his brother has returned.

Dan Coll was appealed for by Samuel M. Winter, Tuapeka Mouth.—As the reservist is eligible to be called in the overseas ballot next month, the appeal was adjourned sine die, the reservist to remain in the Home Guard.

G. K. Cousins, Blue Spur, appealed for exemption from entry to camp, and the appeal was supported by his mother.— The appeal was dismissed, the appellant not to be called till April 30, 1942. An appeal by William J. Davidson, Wairuna, was adjourned sine die, the appelant to remain in the Home Guard.

An appeal by George Cutler, Waitahuna, was adjourned to December 31, 1942.

J. H. Lunan was appealed for by A. J. Lunan, Waitahuna.—As the reservist will soon be eligible for the overseas ballot, the appeal was dismissed, the appellant not to be called before March 31, 1942. The Kaitangata Coal Company, for which Mr F. Carson (manager) appeared, appealed on behalf of 24 employees. The company agreed to send the men to camp in batches of 12. commercing on October 1, 1941. and finishing on March 31, 1942. S. Sharp was appealed for by the Bruce Woollen Company, Milton.—The appeal was adjourned to March 31, 1942. Frederick S. Sheat was appealed for bv Robert Clark, Milton, who asked to retain the reservist till the end of the vear.—Exemption was granted till Decem'ber 31 - , j"', ■'■*. D G. Tweedie was appealed for by Clark Bros., Milton.—The appeal was withdrawn, subject to the reservist going into camp between April 1 and August •31 1942. An appeal bv James S. Kaye, Kaitangata, was adjourned sine die, the appellant to remain in the Home Guard. J. Shanks, jun.. Warepa, was appealed for by his father.— Adjourned to March 31. 1942.' The appeal of C. F. Hughes MillerFlat, who had served two years and ahalf in the navy during the last war was adjourned sine die, on condition that the appellant joined the Home Guard. John C. Mitchell. Wairuna, was appealed for by his father. W. J. Mitchell.— Dismissed, the appellant not to be called till Anril 30, 1942. . " William L. Perkins was appealed for by Robert Lochhead, Balclutha.—The reservist to go into cams between April 1 and July 31. 1942. . • An appeal by Oliver Rusbach, Kaihiku, was adjourned sine die, the appellant to remain in the Home Guard. An appeal by C. G. Sinclair. Evans Flat was supported by the Director of National Service and by C. R. Sheat. Milton.—The appeal was withdrawn, subject to the reservist going into camp after April 1 and being out of camp by August 31. M. Sinclair was appealed for by J. D. Divers. Clinton, who asked to retain the reservist's services till the end of the year.—Withdrawn till December 31. 1941. J D. Smith was appealed for by J. H. Smith. Island Block.—Appeal dismissed, the appellant not to be called before February 28, 1942, and to remain in the Home Guard. ' ■ W. H. Thomson was appealed for by H. Thomson, fruit farmer, Ettrick.—Adjourned sine die. subject to the reservist serving in the Home Guard. G. R. Davidson was appealed for by Thomas Davidson and Sons, LawrenceAdjourned till December 31, 1941. E. J. Wallace was appealed for by W. Graham and Co.. Waihola.—Appeal dismissed till March 31. 1942. An appeal by J. E. Thomson. Milton, who had served four years in the last war. was adjourned sine die. P. J. Maley was appealed for by Michael Maley. Milton. It was contended that the reservist, who would be 20 years of age in August, would be liable for overseas service, and need not do territorial service.—The appeal was dismissed. F. G. Stanway was appealed for by .1. F. Bisset, Wangaloa.—As the reservist is liable for overseas service, the appeal was dismissed.
