EDUCATION BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Otagu Education Board was held yesterday, and was attended by Messrs James Wallace (chairman), D. C. Cameron. N Colquhoun. E. Morgan, D. Marshall, W. R. Brugh, W. Jacobsen. H. A. Brough and W M. Cooper. Grants to Schools The department advised that a grant had been approved for the remodelling of the Owaka District High School and the provision of additional classroom accommodation, A grant of two-thirds of the cost of removing the portable building from St Clair for the purpose of the special class at Green Island was received from the department. It was stated that the board's share of the cost would be the equivalent of the amount it had proposed to expend on the gymnasium to make it suitable for a classroom. Change of Name " Why do we not change the name of this school?" asked a member when a request from the Southbridge School was being considered. "The district is known as Moneymore and so is the post office." It was decided to refer the suggestion to the School Committee. Permanent Health Camp In reply to the board's inquiry regarding the establishment of school clesses at the new Roxburgh Permanent Health Camp, the department advised that the first step for the board to take was to seek the department's approval for the establishment of a school at the health camp. The school would be under the supervision of the bosrd which would appoint and control the teachers. The property and buildings were vested in the trustees of the King George V Memorial Fund, and maintenance and upkeep were matters for the camp authorities. It was understood, however, that they were pleased to have the expert advice of the board's staff. As the camp was to be opened in October the school would not be sufficiently stabilised to enable a permanent staff to be apDointed and to take up duties this term. It was suggested that the board should provide relieving teachers until the end of the year. The information was noted.
