PERAMBULATORS ON BUSES

TO THE BDITOB Sir,—l should be glad of space to, record" an incident which I witnessed this afternoon. I caught the 5 o’clock Rattray street tram grid changed into the Maori Hill bus which was already waiting at the Junction when the tram arrived. After the driver had, started his engine, a woman, apparently delayed by the removal of her baby’s perambulator from, the cable car, v came to the door of the bus and asked the bus driver to put it on the bus for her. She had the baby under one arm and was alsp . in. charge of a small child. The driver, replied that he was not expected to do this service after 5 o’clock, and made no effort, to do so. The Woman, therefore, set off to walk the rest of her way. Although .it was not actually raining at the, time, the weather was cold and damp. As the bus crossed Leven street another bus was coming up the hill. Presumably it was from town, and was a later starter from town than the tram by which the woman had travelled. Across its front were two or three perambulators. ’ Surely it is only sensible that if a plus perambulator, should begin her journey by 5 o’clock, she jShould be enabled to finish it so. I consider the conduct of the bus driver /.concerned both unintelligent and discourteous. —I am, etc.,, Observer. . [The above letter was referred to ithe Corporation transport manager (Mr W. H, Mackenzie), and we regret that some delay in the publication of it has ensued. The transport manager states that perambulators are not generally .carried :at 5 o’clock on other lines, but so far-restrictions have not been imposed on the Roslyn line. In the case mehtipned by our correspondent, had the Jady, travelled by the previous car, or- waited for the following bus, the perambulator could have been accommodated. but this one was presented just as. the bus was leaving on a particularly heavy trip, and the driver did mot consider it advisable to delay it Ed.. 0.D.T.,1
