RED CROSS AND ST. JOHN
MEETING OF JOINT COMMITTEE
The monthly meeting of the Joint Committee, Red Cross and St. John, was attended by Mr J. W. Smeaton (chairman), Misses C- Graham, B. Farquhar, and F. Rattray, Mesdames Stanley Batchelor and G. R- Ritchie, and Messrs C. V. Smith and E J. Johnston (secretary). , '. ■ , A letter was received from the fat. John Ambulance Association thanking the committee for its helpful co-opera-tion in regard to the work of the hospital hostess. Satisfactory reports were received from the hospital visitors—Mesdames Batchelor. Ritchie, and Neill, and Miss Graham. They said that the number of soldier patients at Dunedin Hospital was 36, at Wakari 7. and at Talboys 7. All the men, they remarked, maintained a good spirit, and were grateful to the committee for keeping in touch with them.
Matron Douglass reported that everything at the Montecillo Home was in good order. She said that it was pleasing to note how helpful the patients themselves had. been in many small ways. The hospital returns stated that during the month two patients had been admitted, one discharged, and one had died. The number of men in the home at present was 23. The passing of Robert Westwood, a recent inmate, was deeply regretted by all. The Peninsula Motor Service had once again shown thoughtfulness by placing a bus at the disposal of the home, and the men and staff had enjoyed an outing to Broad Bay. where they had been entertained by members of the Red Cross Committee.
The committee expressed appreciation of the action of the Peninsula Company, and also of the great interest taken in its work by Messrs Thomsons, Ltd., who have been supplying the home with cordials, free of cost, ever since it was opened in 1917.
