COUNCIL'S MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Waikouaiti Borough Council was held on Monday evening, when there were present the Mayor (Mr Andrew Fell), and Crs E. Aitcheson, W. R. McDougall, L. Kerr. J. V. McFie, A. Y. Park, and R. M. Templeton. , . .. The Mayor referred to the recent death of Mr Robert Templeton, who had given his services to the ratepayers of the borough for many years, as Mayor and councillor. He had instructed the clerk to convey to the members of Mr Templeton’s family the sincere sympathy of the council with them in their bereavement,— The action of the Mayor was approved. The district employment officer, Dunedin. wrote asking if the council would be willing to pay the men employed in growing vegetables for the health camps in Waikouaiti. The payments would be made on behalf .of the health camp authorities, and would be refunded to the council.—lt was agreed to pay the workers fortnightly, and also to supervise the work. _ , ' ... The clerk was instructed to write to the Otago Electric Power Board suggesting that as all lamps had been removed from poles visible from the sea, a reduction should be made in the annual charge for street lighting in the borough, and that only the lights now provided should be paid for. „ ~ . , , It was decided to advise the Municipal Association of New Zealand that the council approved of the proposed alterations to the Shops and Offices Act. by providing for a universal Saturday halfholiday, with certain exemptions, as set out in the draft submitted for the council’s consideration. The Finance Committee reported that the balance sheet showed that the sum of £1143 9s 8d had been collected in rates for the year 1940-41, equivalent to 97 per cent, of the total amount levied, compared with 99.39 per cent, for the previous year. An analysis of the figures for the year ended March 31 disclosed the fact that the council should have received £156 12s 2d more in revenue, in order to meet the expenditure incurred during the year. The rates and accounts outstanding at this date amounted to £67 8s 3d. —The report was adopted.
