The extraordinary use of infantry by the Nazis in their invasion of Belgium and Northern France was the subject of reference by Dr Allan Gunn in his address to a recent gathering of the Gisborne Rotary Club. He said that men who hi.d been in the thick of the fighting.had described how German infantrymen came forward, weapons in hand, but not attempting to use them, and simply giving the Nazi salute and calling out: " Heil Hitler! Surrender!" They came, on and on in masses until men defending strong points exhausted their ammunition and actually had to retire under pressure of numbers. The behaviour of the Nazi infantrymen had given rise to the suggestion that they were in some way " deped," and the suggestion certainly provided an interesting subject for speculation, said Dr Gunn.

The two older boys and the girl were able to swim, and, helped by the rescuers, they and the smaller child were brought ashore, apparently frightened but not hurt. The small boy was taken home by a motorist who was one of the eight or nine persons who saw the rescue.
