CRITICS OF ENGLAND

TO CHE EDITOR

Sir—l am surprised that you should aliow a correspodenl, one Warrington Taylor, to take up sa much space one whole column) in what is virtually a mean attack on England, that great and heroic nation which is to-day trie admiration of the freedom-loving peoples of the world. Mr Warrington Taylor is comfortably housed and fed and is enabled to sleep soundly at nights simply because the strong arm of Britain ensures it. Mr Taylor no doubt awakes refreshed after a good night's sleep, undisturbed by the hellish noises of war and. maybe, the raucous shoutings of concentration camp guards, and. having awaked so refreshed, sits down leisurely to a good breakfast, and then sharpens -up his little pencil to have another pop at England.—l am. etc.. Biting- the Hand, Etc.

TO THE EDITOB Sir —lf, as " Vigilant " says, almost all Socialists look forward to the destruction of the British Empire as necessary to the founding of a Socialist plan of economy, then I am afraid there are going to be many disappointed Socialists Likewise, if "Vigilant" thinks that the preservation of capitalism, as we have known it in the past, is necessary for the preservation of the "Empire then I think he also is doomed to disappointment. It is only the Socialist nature of Britain's plan of economy to-day that has prevented her from being alreadv ground down by the Nazi heeL It is now over four years since the rearmament policv of the British Government came into being. Why is the rearmament programme not further advanced than it is? The answer is this, that up to a few months ago the driving force behind the whole business was profits, not guns, and now it is the reverse. Moral, when there is a big job to be done Socialism will accomplish it better than capitalism. Surely the distribution of God's bounty among His people is a big job.—l am. etc., F. R. Hall. Mosgiel. November 8.
