FINAL RICCARTON TRIALS

SPANISH LAD IN FORM (Per United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 7. Several New Zealand Cup horses worked well ip the final trials at Riccarton this morning. Royal Chief, Taurangi, Serenata, .Dictate, and Capricious all did their tasks well, while other attractive workers were Ferriby, Windsor Chief, Spanish Lad, Gold Flight, Scarteen, Density, and Salutation. The conditions were good, the outside of tlie course proper and the plough track both being fast. Ruatiti had to be held back to Sweet Mystery, and then beat her by over a length over six furlongs in Imin 19sec, taking 53 2-ssec for the last half-mile. Belle Cane ran home from the half-mile post in 50sec, Sir Beau following later in 49sec. Both horses did their work freely. Density dashed over the half-mile in 40 l-ssec. and Windsor Chief went over the same ground later to record 47 3-ssec, the best of the morning. Willow Wood, after giving Full Pitch i start, finished in front in 49 4-ssec, and looks to be improved by his race at Motukarara.

Bird of Prey Jiu r similar task in 51 3-ssec.,

Not Out did not have any trouble in giving Epic a good start and an easy beating in 49sec. Lambourn came from behind to finish on level terms with Glenora Boy at the end of seven furlongs in lmin 31sec. the first three in 39 l-ssec.

Phyto and Retrogression were well matched over five furlongs in 63 3-sseci after running the first furlong in 13sec. Gayest Son and Oragon ran six furlongs well in lmin 16 °-ssec. the final half in 50sec.

Hearth took lmin 16sec, also taking SOsec for the final four furlongs. The Buzzer and Swordstick were to have galloped over a mile and a-quarter together, but Swordstick was not in a galloping mood. The Buzzer was held back waiting for Swordstick to join him, but they never got together, and The Buzzer ran' the final half-mile in 51sec. Lockit was too good for Stabilise over seven furlongs in lmin 30sec. Salutation showed to advantage in beating Palfrey by two lengths, with Foreign Coin a similar distance back, on the completion of half a mile in 48 2-ssec. Foreign Coin should have done better. Monetary moved fast in the early stages of half a mile along the back, and, though easing- up, recorded 50sec. Airline and Eulogist finished over seven furlongs together in lmin 32 2-ssec, the final four furlongs in 53 4-ssec. Serenata, Trench Law. The Ring, and Pearl of Asia finished at intervals in the order named over nine furlongs. Serenata and Trench Law were soon together in the lead, but Serenata had little trouble in drawing clear in the final stages. The last mile took lmin 45 l-ssec and the final half 53sec.

After an interval. Spanish Lad beat St. Cloud by a neck over five furlongs in 61sec, the first furlong taking 13 2-ssec. This was an attractive piece of work, and Spanish Lad should do well at the meeting. Dictate and Ferriby soon worked past Sly Fox in a trail over nine furlongs, finishing together two lengths clear of Sly Fox. The last mile took lmin 44 l-ssec, and the final half 52sec. Great Night led Gay Parade most of the way over five furlongs, but Gay Parade drew up to his mate in the run home, the pair recording 63 3-ssec, after taking 13 2-ssec for the first furlong. As Required shaded Verlagia over half a mile in 49 3-ssec, while Good Scout was going a shade better than Gay Thread in 49 4-ssec.

Royal Lancer galloped well over seven furlongs in lmin 31 4-ssec, Rawhamai coming home with him over the last five. The plough track also provided fast going, and Muffler covered seven furlongs in lmin 30sec, the first four in 51 l-ssec. Welsh Fusilier had a margin of two lengths to spare from Iceland Spar in lmin 33 2 T ssec for seven furlongs. Shikari ran out a winner by a length from Pleading over six furlongs in lmin 15 3-ssec, after running the first three in 36 2-ssec King's Toast did a similar task in lmin 16 3-ssec. .' . ' . Don't Forget did five furlongs in 64 2-ssec, the first in 13 3-ssec. Grey Night ran six furlongs in lmin 19 l-ssec. the first two in 26 l-ssec. Sovereign Lady shaded Rue .in the concluding stages of nine furlongs in lmin 58 l-ssec, the first four in 52 l-ssec. Settlement and Prudent Prince were in line at the end of seven furlongs in lmin 30 3-ssec. .< , ~ Stylosa ran the first three furlongs in 37 3-ssec, and finished his six in lmin 16sec. _ . _.. . Taurangi led out from Royal Chief, starting at the nine furlongs post, but after Royal Chief had shown out in the final furlong they eventually reached the post on even terms. The first half-mile took 52sec, seven in lmin 30sec. and the full distance lmin 55 2-ssec. They came home over the final four in 50 2-ssec. both horses galloping freely. Capricious drew away from Wardress in the run home to complete a mile, three lengths in front, in lmin 43 2-ssec. the last three in 38sec. Capricious is very fit, Scarteen put up one'of the best efforts of the morning in a run over six furlongs in lmin 15 2-ssec, the first three taking 37 4-ssec.

Gold Flight moved attractively over seven furlongs in lmin 28 2-ssec. the first half-mile in 50 l-ssec. Alias and Doria worked over seven furlongs, the last six in lmin 16 2-ssec, and four in 51 l-ssec. Alias made the pace, but they finished together. Sir Cameron and Schoolgirl ran six furlongs in lmin 15 3-ssec. the first three taking 37sec. ..„..'., Beau Leon, Kilometre, and Te Kawiti were given a working gallop over a mile, the last six furlomrs in lmin 20sec. After the breakfast interval Chirp and Wild Career ran six furlongs in lmin 16 3-ssec, the first three in 38sec.
