CELEBRATIONS LATER (From Our Own Correspondent) , LONDON. Sept. 12. Eton College reopens for the Christmas half on September 17. In normal times this half would have seen the_ 500th anniversary celebrations ( reach their peak with a day's rejoicing on October 11. the date in 1440 on whicli the college received its charter from Henry VI. .... . But the festivities will be postponed until after the war. and the day's celebrations are likely to be limited to. a whole holiday and a special service in Upper Chapel. On September 12, 1440. Henry VI actually decided to found Eton, and issued a proclamation to that effect, but there will be no, observation, as the school will not be in residence.
