WAIKOUAITI Soldiers’ Farewell There was a very large attendance at the Public Hall on Thursday last when a social and dance was held in honour of the local men who were on leave. The chairman, Mr C. T. McCallum, made presentations to each of the following; Leading Aircraftman R. M. Nichol, Gunner W K Hayward, and Sapper William Foster, and also Private M Ellison, who was present as a guest. The soldiers suitably responded During the evening items were given by the Ladies' Maori Party. Mr and Mrs McNeil and Messrs Ryan and Russell. Miss Park acted as pianist, and Mr Cameron’s band supplied the dance music. Bow’llns Club The opening ot the Waikouaiti Bowling Club, held in conjunction with the Ladies Bowling Club, was well attended by friends and supporters The president, Mr D. W, Maiioch, welcoming the visitors, gave a special welcome to Mr Greig, who represented the Dunedin Centre, and visiting bowlers representing Dunback. Palmerston, St. Kilda, North-East Valley Kalkoral, and Dunedin Clubs An enjoyable afternoon was spent, the visitors commenting very favourably on the state of the green, Mrs Pollock rolled up the first bowl of the, season. The Mayor (Mr Andrew Fell) also extended his best wishes to the club for a successful season. KARITANE Queen Carnival Karitane’s effort to the Queen Carnival was realised on the final day when the total sum of £45 was handed to the Air Force Queen Fund. A successful sale was held in the afternoon, and a soefial ■ anti dance in the evening. The winners of the various competitions were; Mrs V To Tau, Mrs E. Robertson* Miss P. Gibbs, and Mr E. Nichol.
