ART GROUP MEETS

A well-attended meeting of the Dunedin Art Group was held at the studio Moray place, on Monday night. The first half of the programme consisted of a ballotted subject—life drawing, for which one of the members consented to pose. The result was several excellent portraits and life studies, which were criticised by the artists’ fellow members. Later Mr H N. Field gave a stimulating talk entitled “Thoughts on Sculpture.'’ which helped everyone to a clearer understanding of this branch of the plastic arts. Mr Field emphasised the fact that the finished sculpture must show some affinity to the material out of which it was constructed, a point that laymen seldom appreciated when they saw works in which Nature had been distorted. There would be no great works. Mr Field continued, without sound philosophy and spiritual unity The address was illustrated by reproductions of the works of Mcstrovic Skeaping, Archipenko and other leading modern sculptors.
